how to choose a car battery charger

by:VELA     2020-02-29
What is car battery charger?
Charge the car battery, right?
How complicated is it?
Believe it or not, there are hundreds of chargers that can be used for a variety of situations.
How is your situation?
Your special circumstances will determine how you can choose a battery charger for your car.
Battery Charger or jump starter?
The first question is if you really need a battery charger or just want to carry an emergency starter in your car.
Battery Chargers usually stay at home or in the store and in order to charge the battery they are plugged into the home current and in many cases it also remains charged.
The jump starter is actually a battery that you can carry with you, and you can use it to start a low-powered car battery in an emergency.
This article is not for you if you are looking for a jump beginner.
I will have another article on how to select the jump launcher.
Battery size and voltage: Next you need to ask yourself what vehicle will use the battery;
A car, a boat, a light truck, a garden tractor, a classic car, etc?
The vehicle will determine whether the device will need to charge a large or small battery and whether it will only need to handle a 12 volt or also a 6 Volt application.
Ordinary cheap car battery chargers for home use usually handle 12 volts and 6 volts in some cases.
If you don\'t need 6 volts (
Some classic cars and some tractor batteries)
, Don\'t think you will, then you can save money if you choose a 12 volt charger.
Now some of the best home chargers are still relatively cheap and can handle applications of 6 V and 12 V.
Battery Chemistry: You think you left chemistry behind at school. . .
I promise I will make things simple!
Most car batteries are lead.
Acid battery with lead plate in acid bath.
What makes them chemically different is whether they are standard lead.
Acid, AGM, gel cells or deep circulation.
You don\'t need to know what these chemicals mean, you just need to know what type they are.
Not all chargers are designed to handle special needs for AGM, gel Cel, or deep cycle types.
Most of them are standard lead. acid.
In addition to cars, special chemicals can also be found in applications designed by other devices.
Fully automatic: battery charger can be charged manually or automatically.
Many are fully automatic, which means they can detect when it is fully charged and automatically switch to trickle charging or floating mode to prevent it from overcharging.
This is an important feature of many better quality home chargers.
Safety first: modern car battery chargers have many safety features, the more the better.
Some of the security features to look for include: 1)
Anti-polarity warning-
If you have the wrong cable connected to the wrong post, the charger can warn you.
Normally, this will cause sparks, which may ignite the gas around the battery and cause an explosion. 2)Float Mode -
The fully automatic charger will have a trickle charge or floating mode that detects when it is fully charged and backs the charging amplifier to avoid overcharging the battery.
In some cases, severe overcharging can lead to overheating, damage or even explosion. 3)
Fire fighting fixture
No matter how careful you are, the spark is still possible when connecting the charger fixture.
Some devices have this security feature that can reduce or even prevent sparks at the connection. 4)
Battery Tester-
Many Chargers can detect the health of the battery.
Over time, they can pile up sulfuric acid on their plates, which reduces their ability to accept full charging.
Some devices can detect that it cannot accept full charging and alert you to this issue. 5)
Battery maintenance/maintenance-
Many Chargers are able to maintain or maintain the battery when connected.
This is especially useful for those who are rarely used or stored in part of the time, such as garden tractors, motorcycles, boats, RVs, etc. 6)Clamp Amps -
The clip attached to the Post has an amp rating.
Usually 50 amps or more.
It should not be less.
Other features: 1)
Microprocessor control
Basically, the microprocessor is a computer on the chip and can guide the whole charging process based on the feedback from the charger and the battery itself.
Many modern chargers are controlled by microprocessor, those Chargers have more options to adjust or recycle the battery, and have more granular control over the charging process and even improve the charging performance. 2)Multi-Step Charging -
Some chargers are able to charge in multiple steps, which allows them to control the charging process more flexibly and finely.
Steps can go from charging and floating mode to up to 7 steps provided by the Genius charger: Step 1: The diagnosis checks the voltage before starting the charging process to make sure the connection is good, the battery is in stable condition.
Step 2: If necessary, the recovery process of the recovery initialization deep discharge or sulfuric acid (desulfation)
A battery that pulses a small amount of current.
Step 3: the soft start starts the batch charging process in a gentle way (soft)charge.
Step 4: the batch charging process continues and returns 80% of the battery capacity.
25%, 50% and 75% rechargeable led display.
Step 5: absorption increases the charge level to 90%.
The charger will provide a small amount of current to provide safe and efficient charging and limit gas emissions.
Step 6: The battery is fully charged and can be used at any time.
In this step, the charger will only provide enough current as needed.
If more current is required, the charger will switch to maintenance.
Step 7: maintain the continuously monitored voltage to determine if maintenance costs should be started.
If the terminal voltage is lower than a specific value, the charger will start the maintenance cycle until the voltage reaches the appropriate value and then stop the charging cycle.
The cycle between trickle and maintenance is repeated indefinitely to keep it fully charged without overcharging.
The charger can stay connected indefinitely. 3)
Multiple or appropriate charging amplifier rates: Many Chargers either have multiple charging amplifier rates depending on whether you charge small, large, or maintain the battery.
It is common to have at least 2 amps and 10 am p charge rate if not medium 4-1
The same is true for 6 amps.
Unless the charging time is important to you, it doesn\'t matter to have a large charging amplifier rate.
A microprocessor-controlled battery charger with a lower amplifier rate will charge more slowly, but this will be done if the time is not unacceptable.
Check the battery charger to make sure it matches your app in terms of charging time and charge amps. 4)
Ease of use: if the charger is easy to use is important to you, then fully automatic, adjustment is the least feasible.
If you have more than one battery, each of which is a different type, then you may need a more complex but capable charger with the option of output voltage, charging rate, battery chemicals, wait.
The charger can be heavy or light, can be large or small, can be bulky or portable.
If you need a larger charger to be more portable, look for the handle on it.
You have it.
In this article, I have covered many of the features and specifications that should be taken into account when choosing a car battery charger.
